Where to start with solids?
Before introducing solids around 6 months (not prior to 4 months), look for these developmental signs that your baby is ready:
- Can sit with minimal support or upright on parents lap
- Has good head and neck control
- Shows interest in food (watching, reaching, opening mouth)
- Mouthing hands, suckling toys
The Role of Early Solids:
These first solid food experiences are primarily about learning textures, tastes, and the mechanics of eating in combination with a babies milk feeding. What, when and how young children are fed during the first two years of life lay the foundation for skills, growth and development (UNICEF, 2025). Think of it as sensory exploration and skill development whilst meeting nutritional milestones.
We use a responsive feeding approach, which means following your baby’s cues and making mealtimes positive, pressure-free experiences (Pérez-Escamilla et al., 2021).
Every positive experience matters in shaping your little one’s feeding journey for the now and the long-term!
